Developing an image verification tool for fact-checkers and journalists

The spread of disinformation is one of the biggest threats to democracy and public health. Jigsaw is a unit within Google that forecasts and confronts emerging threats, creating future-defining research and technology to keep online conversations safer.

This project was focussed on incubating and evangelizing groundbreaking technology that measurably reduces the prevalence or effectiveness of disinformation.

Approach

As a UX researcher at Key Lime Interactive working with Jigsaw my role was to help evaluate the image verification tool to guide the product road map development. I worked closely with Engineers, the Product Manager and the UX Designer to understand the research needs of the team.

To collect user feedback, we worked with a panel of fact-checkers and journalists who had early access to the tool.  Feedback was collected through surveys and remote 1:1 sessions.

Process

We did multiple rounds of research and the insights helped inform product development iterations.

Insights

Some of the insights that informed product development include:

  • Many fact-checkers and journalists deal with low-resolution and small images that they find through social media and instant messenger platforms. This poses unique challenges to the detection technology, which is generally more accurate when images are in their original format and quality.

  • When using the tool, journalists and fact-checkers need to better understand the relative strengths and weaknesses of each detector.
